DESCRIPTION: Dr. Greger shares the story of his grandmother, who inspired him to go into medicine.

This is the first time I’ve ever done a video like this. This came about because of user feedback we got in that survey we did a few weeks ago. Many of you asked for me to come up with more basic, introductory videos you can share with those new to both the site and the whole concept that our food choices can exert tremendous power over our health destiny and longevity.

So with the volunteer help of videographer Grant Peacock (http://www.gpi.tv/), I came up with ten introduction and overview-type videos for both new users to orient themselves, and for long-time users to use to introduce people to the site. Stay tuned for:

• Why You Should Care About Nutrition (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/why-you-should-care-about-nutrition)
• Taking Personal Responsibility for Your Health (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/taking-personal-responsibility-for-your-health)
• The Philosophy of NutritionFacts.org (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/the-philosophy-of-nutritionfacts-org)
• Behind the Scenes at NutritionFacts.org (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/behind-the-scenes-at-nutritionfacts-org)
• How Not to Die from Heart Disease (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/how-not-to-die-from-heart-disease/)
• How Not to Die from Cancer (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/how-not-to-die-from-cancer/)
• How Not to Die from Diabetes (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/how-not-to-die-from-diabetes/)
• How Not to Die from Kidney Disease (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/how-not-to-die-from-kidney-disease/)
• How Not to Die from High Blood Pressure (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/how-not-to-die-from-high-blood-pressure)

What we’re going to do is alternate between these broader overview-type videos and the regularly scheduled content so as not to bore those who just crave the latest science.

Have a question about this video? Leave it in the comment section at http://nutritionfacts.org/video/the-story-of-nutritionfacts-org and someone on the NutritionFacts.org team will try to answer it.

I weighed 368 pounds at age 27 and had severe chest pains at rest. I was worried that I was going to die. A friend shared Dr. Greger's Uprooting the Leading Causes of Death video with me. I was convinced by Dr. Greger's evidence-based approach and adopted a plant-based diet right away. I lost over 30 pounds in the first month, 100 pounds in the first 6 and 160 pounds in the first year. Today I'm about 190 pounds down. I ran a half marathon and I've done a 70 mile bike ride, with some 5k's and triathlons as well. I was obese for my entire life up until adopting a plant-based diet. It has literally saved my life and made it immensely more comfortable and enjoyable to be in my own body, no longer self-conscious everywhere I go that I am being judged for being fat. No longer being winded just for walking up a short flight of stairs. Being healthy enough to run in races. I no longer rely on coffee to feel awake in the morning, nor do I suffer from a post-lunch comatose state every day. My life is much more enjoyable than it was before, and I have Dr. Greger and my friend to thank for it.

Dr Greger, you are a very, very good human being. Don't stop doing what you are doing because it is people like you that will pry open the eyelids of all of the people out there that suffer from curable diseases, educating and allowing them to make the changes in their lives for the better.

I am just one of thousands of people who are so thankful for your work, Dr. G! You say you read all that medical literature so we don't have to...hey, even if I read it, it's not likely I would understand it. One of the great services you do is interpret medicalese so all of us can understand and then make informed decisions. You're terrific :-)

  • Nick Name

For-profit medicine is yet another way capitalism crushes humanity. If there are future generations they will look back at us the same way we do now at the slave and feudal societies of the past.

  • Marion Dyer

I have you're book and using it to get the nutritional help the drug GP don't have. I'm getting better. My problem is tegretol for epilepsy that I've been on for 30 years. That's resulted in 2 fractcherd vertebra. I'm vegan so Thank you.

  • W.J. Kelly

Six months ago, the doctor diagnosed me as being overweight, with hypertension. I watched every one of Dr. Geiger's vids, and started a strict plant-based diet. I ate no animal products of any kind, and all plain unprepared natural food. After 6 months- weight the same and blood pressure worse! I went on a low-carb diet, eating protein, fat, and unprepared vegetables. In 2 weeks my blood pressure returned to normal, I lost 8 pounds, and I feel 100% better. Muscles pains, mental fogginess, and fatigue are almost all gone. I feel like an idiot for buying into Dr. Greger's dietary advice. It might have killed me.

  • Zahria 269

    I'd buy a NutritionFacts.org rap album.

Amazing story. I too saved my life by changing my diet in 1998. My story is not as dramatic or nail biting, but still significant to me, because it is my life (obviously). I had a pre-cancerous polyp "the size of a golf ball" removed from my colon and I had ulcers in my stomach. I haven't eaten beef in 17 years. I haven't drank a beer in 17 years. I lost 50 pounds and invented a diet formula to follow: "One gram of fiber for every 100 calories" I only eat food that fulfills this requirement. Thanks for the great information you publish on your channel. It is an inspiration to me and many other people. Keep up the good work.

  • Kadriella

My dear grandmother died too soon and too suddenly 6 years ago...I miss her so much! Her diet was high in animal products, sweets, snacks. She wasn`t very active, she had bad knees... I have made a commitment to be there for my child and grandchildren and grandgrandchildren...in good health! So I can love them longer, so they could love me longer, in this life we are all in <3<3<3
